Advanced Teen Coaching

The Advanced Teen Coaching is a monthly commitment for youth climbers that have an interest in learning how to train for climbing both physically and mentally. We want to empower climbers to make their own decisions about their pathway of progression, and to help them achieve long-term development in their climbing. Climbers will learn about how to set goals to track progress, work on their mindset, and focus on specific movement training.

We also expect our climbers to commit to doing several sessions of climbing per week (both with the coaches and on their own). There will be two coached sessions weekly. The first is a 1.5 hour long session on Fridays at the Wall and the second is a 2h session at Bloc, in Ballymount. We will have a 1:6 coach to climber ratio, with two coaches and twelve climbers.

In this program, climbers will work with coaches Mark Scanlon and Louis Doherty to grow their climbing skills in the following ways:

  • Technique
  • Fitness
  • Endurance
  • Passion
  • Climbing Etiquette
  • Being a good teammate and member of our community

Climbers are encouraged to sign up for multiple monthly blocks of coaching. The coaching blocks are on a  first come, first served basis. If there is a large demand for the coaching, multiple blocks per month may be addedweekly

Meet the Coaches:

Mark Scanlon is the Head route setter at The Wall. He has achieved high standings in national competitions and has competed on the IFSC World Cup stage. Mark’s experience as a routesetter and a competitor has given him the ability to understand complex movements needed for climbing and the knowledge to achieve a high level of performance.

Louis Doherty was a routesetter and a USA climbing certified coach for a year. He moved to Dublin in May 2022 and has been setting and coaching at The Wall for the last few months. As a USA youth climbing coach, he coached his athletes to make it to USA Climbing National Competitions. He hopes to help create a similar coaching and learning environment for youth climbers here in Ireland.
